In Game 1 of the Pirates vs Yankees series in the Bronx, in the bottom of the 8th inning, one of my favorite things in baseball happened; the benches cleared! Greg Brown and Matt Capps debated on the telecast what could've caused it. Dennis Santana isn’t normally a hothead. They believed that Callabero was doing a little gamesmanship by not getting set, toying with Santana's rhythm.
I have a different theory. New York still can’t accept that Maz hit the greatest home run in history, and won the 1960 World Series against them. This is the only logical explanation. It doesn’t matter if no one on the Yankees or Pirates roster was born when it happened. The sting of a loss that bad never goes away. The city still holds a grudge against our top level sportsmanship players.
They can whine and cry all they want about how the run differential was so lopsided in their favor. They can point to 27 other years they won it all. But nothing will change the fact that Maz took a big juicy bite out of the big apple that day, chewed it with his mouth open, and washed it down with an Iron City beer.
While we are on the subject, the Flying Dutchman was better than the Great Bambino and the Iron Horse. Clemente was better than Mantle and would’ve had more Home Runs if he played in that Little League Field they call a ballpark. Andrew Carnegie’s steel built that city, the Pirates will take the next two games of this series, and if they don’t the benches will clear again! This time no one holds Santana back!
Let’s Go Bucs!
